We got up early and headed to Glastonbury in the hope of avoiding the midday to late afternoon rush.
On the way we went past Stonehenge, so I just had to see it. It was early in the morning and so not open to the public as yet but you could see it really well from the road anyway.
Our plan worked and we arrived in Glastonbury before it got too busy. The day before we arrived 85,000 people had already arrived and so there were already people everywhere and tents all over the place. We put up our tent, settled in with some lunch and wandered around trying to get our bearings. Glastonbury is so huge! There are at least 10 main stages and then there are heaps of smaller tents/marquees with bands playing or things going on. The first night we planned to see a few bands before the official start the following day but as there were only a couple of bands on they were packed. It began raining at around 9.00 so eventually decided that it was a good chance to get an early night in preparation for the coming days.
It rained quite heavily for most of the night so when we woke up the following day there was mud everywhere. Out came the wellies and they remained the footwear of choice for two days. Based on the wash out that the last couple of years have been we were very lucky as there was only a little sprinkle for the rest of the day and then fined up for the rest of the weekend. By Sunday the mud had hardened up leaving only a few well worn muddy patches.
On the first day we saw the following bands Kate Nash, Ida Maria, The Subways, Cuban Brothers, The Feeling, Candi Staton, The Gossip, Steve Gribbin (comedy), Fun Lovin' Criminals, Estelle, Dizee Rascal and Pete Doherty.
Saturday we saw Shakin' Stevens, Hilltop Hoods, Crowded House, Black Kids, The Wombats, Duffy, Manu Chao, Amy Winehouse and Jay-Z.
Sunday we saw John Mayer, Scouting for Girls, Mark Ronson, Sam Sparrow, The Zutons and Groove Armada.
There were so many things to do and see at Glastonbury. We also wandered around Shangri-La - where nothing seems quite right.greenfields, where everything is a bit hippy, the Stone Cirlce, where everyone seems to go to hang out after a long night. Flatonia - a hill with heaps of flags, just because they are pretty. Trash City, where everything is made of stuff welded together etc. Some really bizarre stuff.
We got up very early Monday morning once again to miss the rush and it only took 45 minutes to get out of the car park.
