We rode the IC train into Pisa and made good time because there were a lot less stops. We rolled into Pisa just after 10am, deposited our luggage in the depository and walked a couple of miles (30 minutes) to the Field of Miracles, enjoying the livliness of Pisa along the way.
It was really amazing, turning the corner and seeing the Duomo and the Tower spring into view. After standing and staring at everything for a few minutes, we headed over to the ticket booth to make our reservations to climb to the top of the tower. Fifteen euros each got us a 12:20pm slot and, in the meantime, we strolled through the grounds, marveling at the craftmanship and the beauty of these monuments
Finally, our time came and we were allowed to start climbing. The marble stairs, all 300 of them, are quite narrow and slick and Gary said he felt a little dizzy from the spiral staircase. We made it to the top just fine, though, and were rewarded with fabulous views of Pisa, the Duomo and the old city walls. After taking a million pictures, we made our way down carefully...and after a quick lunch at a panficio, we hopped the next train to Florence.
The trip to Florence was uneventful...and a taxi ride from Santa Maria Novella to the Hotel Fleming (one mile from the airport) cost 20 euros.
Since it started raining pretty steadily, we stayed in tonight and went to bed early. I know it will be a long travel day tomorrow.
