The boat from Surat Thani wasn't until 11pm, so we had a few hours to kill on a small street with only some food stalls for entertainmnet. I seriously think the people of Surat Thani could capitalise more on the tourists who get trapped here in this situation, by having a few massage places etc. Julia and I would have happily paid to have a massage to kill an hour while we waited to leave!
Instead we wandered about the street for as long as possible, then got on the boat. We thought it must be nearly time to go...but we still had over an hour to wait, so we picked our 'beds'. It was one massive berth for all. The mattresses about 60cm in diameter, and if you were lucky, an inch apart from the person next to you. There was no upstairs area where you could just sit in some fresh air, so we were all caked in our own sweat in a motionless boat as we waited to leave
Julia was asleep before we even left, thanks to earplugs and an ability to sleep anywhere. I was quite jealous. I can normally sleep anywhere, but on this, it was just soooooooo hot, I found it impossible....and then when I did attempt to put my head down, I saw a giant cockroach between my mattress and the persons beside me, and that just put me off sleeping completely - euuuggghhhhhh!!!!!
Never been so glad to hear a ship horn signalling the end of a journey!

'Berths' on the cockroach boat...
. It was already my worst experience ever of a travel situation. When the boat eventually did leave, it went so slowly, you relished when the wind picked up to put some fresh air through the boat.
