"Where were you when .... died?"
A poignant moment in history. I remember being in Greece with my friend Marion and someone else, when our usual breakfast waiter came up and said "You hear the news...Princess Di...die..." We were a bit confused, thinking whether he meant the Queen mum, but yeah, that was true.
This time, Steve & I were about to go on a boat trip, and I quickly logged on from the pick-up place, and saw all the status updates on Facebook, relating to Michael Jackson! Whoah! I'm glad we knew in advance though, otherwise we'd have been confused by the next scene we saw.....as it's low season at the moment, one of the Koh Phi Phi diving schools had already started capitalising on it by offering a special "RIP Michael Jackson Thriller Tour", where you could "moonwalk under water"! (See photos!)
Anyway, we were on our way to do a tour that takes you to 'Maya beach', where they filmed 'The Beach'. Given our escapades in previous days on the longboat, we decided to go on a big boat for this one. (Even though I don't add salt to my food, I think I've had my intake for the year from the Krabi longboat adventure, lol!)
We went to Monkey island...where there were lots of ...monkeys...a viking cave....where there were lots of.....men living as vikings....in a way (they live there for a year at a time, getting eggs etc from the birds that nest there on the cliff), a lagoon, where there were lots of fish, and I so didn't get in! then of course, Maya Beach, where they filmed 'The Beach' which was lovely.
We stayed on 'Long Beach' on Koh Phi Phi, which isn't that far from the main beach, but it's only accessibly by longboat - so you have to know the times of the tide too. It was a lovely beach there, and the resident dog was very cute (Woh Too) - a cross between a poodle and something else I can't remember. It would come out and just flop with 4 legs spreadeagled on the ground. If you did want to walk, there was a steep jungle walk you could do - Steve and I did that once, in the daytime, but opted for the far easier longboat ride the rest of the time! The place we stayed was lovely - as well as the best beach, there was a pool as well - bliss!
We met my Israeli friend Yael on our last night on Koh Phi Phi. I met her in Rio over a year ago, so it was cool to meet her again. We went to the beach party with her and her friend Moran, and it was pretty crazy....free whisky buckets (not 'normal' whisky - which I don't like), and entertainment with fire - hoop jumping, the burning skipping rope, and the limbo fire walk....
...we all just let the insane people get on with the fire daredevil tricks, lol!
