For the last couple of days in Brazil, Julia & I headed to Paraty (which is where I had my ´near death experience´ last year!) We left Ilha Grande on a dull day, but it was sunny when we arrived in Paraty - clearly the weather is on our side now!
Unfortunately however, on the first night there we had to buy more ´human condoms´as the rain lashed down again - and I mean lashed - enough to cause the river to flood!! In the morning the water level was still really high, but at least the rapids that had been gushing through the town had stopped! Julia saw 2 boats being swept out to sea, and a man we spoke to the next day knew a man who had found his car in the morning...up a tree!!
We had a random street party in the rain (not realising the destruction it was causing!) where a man intoxicated us with the caiparinhas from his street stall. They were very nice caiparinhas, but we did suffer the next day!
Unfortunately I then had to leave for Sao Paulo on the night bus on Saturday night...but guess who was on the same bus as me (having got on an hour earlier)? Flavia & Annie - the Brailian girls we met on Ilha Grande - small world!
Also, because of the flood, loads of the roads were closed, and taxis were off the road as well. The girl in the hostel had to ask one of the staff to drive me to the bus station so I wouldn't miss my bus - imagine my delight when the vehickle was none other than...a BRIGHT GREEN BEETLE! Top!
