So off we went to Volcan Masaya, a large active volcano where you are supposed to be able to see lava.

We started at the lookout point in Santa Katerine and the view is of Lago de Apoyo, a beautiful crater lake. The view was gorgeoys. Then we all piled back into the bus and headed to the Masaya market... Another Lonely planet must see as it is supposed to be the best market around and the answer to all souvenir and gift shopping problems!! Ummm, yes, well, no, fine! I think if you were looking for standard tourist garbage that when you get home you look at and go 'omg what was I thinking', then this is definitely the place! We weren't able to find anything that met the criteria of interestig, different and local. Half the stuff was made in China!

After having spent half an hour at the market we were driven to Volcan Masaya to see the crater at sunset which was very beautiful. The crater was smoking so the colours of the sky round the crater were awesome. Unfortunately there was too much smoke to see any lava but we did manage to see into the crater which was a new experience. From there we were given our crash helmets and went to see the bat caves. The caves were really cool and we saw a few bats and a tarantula. Apparently based on how the activity of the volcano changes so the number of bats in the cave changes. The next cave we visited was jampacked with bats as its subterranean system is apparently not directly linked to the volcano. We had a great time on the volcano albeit not seeing any lava but still a good tour.

We then went back to have our last yummy non Nicaraguan meal in Granada and headed out to Lago de Apoyo the following day.

Hi Kat. Looks like all is going well!

Every time I see one of your blogs, I get more jealous. This is another one for my personal bucket list.
