We were very impressed by the "old city" and "buildings pretending to be old", as the girl at the hostel had told us. They had done an excellent job of restoring the old style, and the area was charming and authentic. I bought an amber and silver ring from one of the many small shops in the area, and we ate at a small, Polish restaurant - excellent stuffed cabbage and a honey drink, resembling mead - very warming and potent. Later we sampled the food at the student establishment - a milk bar near the university, which was a relic of soviet days. Both the food and the service was very basic - pancakes in sour cream and crappy coffee, all with the lightest, cheapest metal cutlery I have ever come accross. However, for that price, you can't complain.

Later we visited a museum in an old house, where there was an excellent exibition. Children told of their experiences from the war and the prison camps, and Paul Eric was especially interested in those. We also visited a church, where again, they were remembering the past. You really could think the war was only a century ago, the way everyone is living in the past!
