Where I stayed
the Okavango delta

Saturday, October 2, 2010

I could tell you about the Okavango Delta, the beauty of the swamp, its colours, nature, the sounds and smells. The way the sun reflects on the water, the lilies and the reeds.
I could try and describe how it feels to surrender to the clear, fresh water, your body soothed and tranquil, how it feels like heaven to drift along in a mokoro, watching the slow movements of the strong, gentle poler, listening to the sound of rippling water, how peace descends on you, the feeling of serenity.
I could try, but I don't think I could ever really find the words to tell you what it was like, how the world just slipped away.

I don't even know I should tell you this. It's kind of a private affair.
But please, don't go there.
There is nothing for you to do; no electricity, water, toilets or showers. No shops or restaurants.
You will lie awake all night listening to the terrible noise of the crickets and frogs. And run for your life should you come eye to eye with an elephant or lion. The thorns of the bush will catch your clothes, tear your flesh.

So don't go. Don't go.

Only fools fall in love with the swamp.
And like a fool they dream they'll be the only one.......

this world is so beyond anything we mere mortals can envisage.
but trying hard to feel what you're experiencing. impossible of course.
there'll be so much to tell when you get back, but we'll never really know will we? love P
