The Fish River Canyon was big enough to be impressive - comes second after the Grand Canyon, we were told. But you wont see the striking colours of the more famous one - this canyon shows mostly shades of grey, some brown and green. Deep down at the bottom a puddle of brownish water.
You can walk around it, but you can't venture in. Now that would have made all the difference, I mean, sometimes just looking is not enough.
We were there to watch the sunset, carrying our beers and wines, (ok, mine was whisky) to fully enjoy the moment.
Somehow I missed it. Not the sunset, but the magic. Unless you count the sun, bouncing and twirling a funny little dance, just before disappearing like a bright pink marble. Could it be mocking the spectators?
It must have been a trick of the eye cos no-one commented on this amusing little show. And no, I hadn't drunk that much either.
Driving back to the camp in the after-glow of sunset, the desert picked up colour, the harsh, grey-green plants reflecting soft pastels, a suprisingly delicate touch, the sand shimmering mysteriously, warm and golden.

It didn't last, but for a moment I saw the hidden beauty of the desert.
Maybe that was the sun's cryptic message: look for the magic when I'm gone.

And so it was, after all, an unforgettable, magical moment.
