Meaning something like: 'Every disadvantage has it's advantage.'
I suppose being deprived of television and radio could be seen as a drawback, but the big payoff is that bad news doesn't reach you, not immediately at least, so you have some extra days of blissful ignorance.
So it could happen that Holland was financially falling apart, on it's last legs, the great 'credit crunch' had hit us and we hadn't even noticed.
Unfortunately, some people, who love us very much, very kindly saw fit to phone, email and MSN us - there might still be some homing pigeons on their way -bringing us the bad news, begging us to come home and save ourselves from financial ruin
That certainly stopped me in my tracks.
This sounded very, very serious, very bleak indeed. And I hadn't even had breakfast yet, I mean, it landed a bit raw on my stomach.
Right, never mind the cornflakes. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Oh, come on, no way would I call the bar opened at 9 am! Coffee, of course.
I lined up the espresso's and started thinking.
At the risk of sounding immodest, at times of crisis I function remarkably well, and I was going to save the day.
For starters the house in Amsterdam would have to go.
Worth a tidy sum yesterday, the price is plummeting as we speak.
Let's just give it away.
Then move to France (ok Johan, the advantages are becoming obvious), live off the land. Honestly, it's unbelievable what you just pick up by the side of the road and fields. All kinds of fruit, nuts, and herbs. Figs, tomatoes, grapes in the garden. And then there's all the stuff that comes your way from neighbours and friends.
You needn't buy a thing.
Plenty of wood lying around for the fire.
I could keep some chickens. Fresh eggs every day.
My shy old neighbour, René, he has lovely rabbits
Hold on, this is not going to work.
Peter's expecting me to come up with a solution.
Does anyone know if there are still poorhouses in Amsterdam?
Saved by the bell, and it looks like we going to be just fine.
Peter just came off the phone, having had a natter with someone who handles our finances.
Said the whole thing was a storm in a tea cup.
Not to worry, would all blow over.
Yeah, well, that's all very well for him to say, but I was contemplating murdering a rabbit.
I'm sorry but I've got to go.
I'm gonna climb over the wall to Rene's garden and sincerely apologize to his rabbits
