I'm not big on birthdays - if anything I think it's the one who gave birth that should be honored.
But it's an occasion, an opportunity to let someone know he or she is special to you.
Well, today seems as good a day as any, so......
When traveling, away from home for long, friends and family can seem as far from your mind as the miles between you.
And that's partly what you wanted, to get away from it all.
But you don't really escape - you can't. They are part of you, wherever you are, they are with you.
The ones you love and care for, and they for you, are the ones that reflect your life, who you are. Mapping it out as only they know how.
Precious, and not to be taken for granted.
And it's good to say so - but don't you dare call me sentimental.
So tonight I drink to family and friends, old and new, near and far.
We'll be together, sometime, soon,
and I will know how lucky I am,
still silently I'll count the days till I can leave once more -
and miss you yet again.
