We finally made it to a castle - Fénelon, somewhere between Sarlat and Souillac.
I'll tell you it was magnificent, and beautiful, inside and out. Views  (of course, it's strategically built) you want to jump right in to -wouldn't  recommend that, by the way.
Anyway, if you're interested read  www.best-of-perigord.tm.fr  as they describe it far better than I ever can.
What really caught my attention was the man at the entry selling tickets.
A stocky, middle-aged (I'm paying him a compliment here) man, frencher than french. Clad in a  uniform of sorts, looked like he'd slept in it, bushy grey-white mustache, thick glasses. What can I say?
We wandered up to the little box he lived in, all smiles and at our best behavior.
He looked up, disturbed, raising his eyebrows questioningly, as if he had no idea what we were doing there.
Begrudgingly he sold us the tickets (7,50 euro), then, to our surprise and delight, asked us where we came from.
'Holland, England,'  we gushed, gratefully releasing the breath we'd been holding.
Without so much as a  's'il vous plait '  he slapped down a Dutch tour guide and continued to ignore us.
So much for love.

Now, have you ever had a cat that just wouldn't be stroked? You think it's playing hard to get, and anyway, you just can't resist?
And, what did you get?
The French remind me of these haughty felines.
Don't stroke them.
My experience is, in their own time they'll come round, purring, if you're lucky, rubbing against your legs -
and other parts of your body if you don't watch out!
