There's a stream running through our house, water seeping in from the rock it's built on.
The little road has turned into a muddy current. This is serious rain.
Claire and Ralph + their two children, our 'bottom' neighbors, arrived from England last night.
Praying for sunshine, as by some ill fate, it always starts raining soon as they get here.
I've seen them cowering around their pool under their umbrellas.
To make matters worse, the weather in England is sunny and warm right now.
I hope for them it picks up, but the forecast is bleak
Claire is a music professor and travels the world playing the flute. Not my favorite instrument, I'm afraid.
Peter used to play the flute. His brother got to learn to play the piano, and went on to make a small fortune out of it, Peter got the flute. Soon as he realized he was not cut out to teach some stupid kids something he didn't much care for himself, he traded it for the bass guitar and joined his brother's band - rock 'n roll!
Those were the days, we were the young and daring.
Now I look at Peter as he waits to move onto the motorway, and waits, and waits - till eventually a truck thunders by and he smugly says: 'Good thing I didn't rush on,' and I think: 'God give me strength, you could have crossed it ten times before that lorry came.' Same with parking, you'd think he was taking his driving test. Must be just so - he will not inconvenience anyone.
Having said that, I can't park to save my life. I find frustrated little notes tucked under the windscreen wipers:
'Where did you learn to drive?'
'The dent in your door's cos I couldn't get into my car' or a simple: 'Are you blind?'
The last one was funny, 'limp dick' it said, assuming I was a man, while women are supposed to be the bad drivers.
Still, it kinda irks me, Peter's cautiousness. He wasn't always like that, what does it predict for the future?
It's part of growing older and I'm not sure I like it.
Anyway, if I'm really, really honest, it's not so much the driving that bothers me, he's a good driver actually - it's the flute.
I mean, just suppose, what if, as he gets on, he wants to start playing the flute again?
