But seriously, the Dordogne is truly beautiful. Not in any way spectacular, as the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls, but in a modest, simple and unpretentious way. Calming and soothing like a warm scented bath or an easy chair. And it grows on you, you get to love it, need it, yearn for it. Well, that's what happened to me, anyway.
Today, we went for a walk. So much green, as if god tipped over an enormous sea of green paint. Trees, meadows, shrubs, how many different kinds of green can there be? And wild flowers, I don't know their names -save daisies, buttercups and pansies - pink, white, yellow and purple ones. You can pick them and stick em in a jam jar, the prettiest bouquet you've ever seen, there's plenty.
The fragrance, delicate and sweet. I was in heaven, dog splashing though every puddle he could find, strangely enough ignoring the cows. Those ladies where extremely interested in him though, stepping forward to the barbed wire, flashing their eyelashes. Such gentle animals, I'd love to take some with me to Amsterdam.
Plodding up hill with my man, I idly wondered what he would do if I keeled over and died of exhaustion then and there, in the middle of nowhere. 'I'd lay you amidst the flowers and make love to you for the last time, hoping your spirit had not yet departed,' was the unexpected answer. Wow, how romantic, makes it almost seem worthwhile. I'd imagined he respectfully roll me into a ditch, reach for his map 'des randonnees' (walks) and carefully mark the place he'd left me, so he could point it out, politely and precisely, to the gendarmes, should he happen upon any in this sparsely populated stretch of land.
Well, just goes to show..........that's the thing about walking, not just what you experience, but what you imagine.......
