JOURNEY: Cape Hillsborough to Seaforth, through Mackay to Sarina and then overnight at Clairview- 220kms

                     Clairview to Rockhampton -211kms

WEATHER: Windy, sunny off and on, temperature around 30 degrees. Comfortable!

The Bruce Highway A1 from Cairns to Brisbane is a very dangerous road and accounts for 1 in 6 deaths on Australian roads according to a report by the RACQ. On Monday last, 5 people died when their vehicle drifted into the path of a large semi trailer.

The road is very narrow in places with few passing lanes and some damaged or non existent shoulders; pot holes and rough surfaces add more risk. The section between McKay and Sarina which we are driving today is rated as extremely treacherous and Childers to Rockhampton rates the same.

You feel the danger as you drive and Sheila felt the strain with the need for extra concentration and keeping alert to other drivers who are not so careful.
There are roadworks and repairs in progress on some sections of the road which is good to see.

We took stops frequently and were relieved to reach Clairview in one piece!

We stopped only briefly in Mackay a big country town doing well because of the huge coal mines in the area and as the sugar capital of Australia. We had heard good reports of the little seaside village of Sarina so parked there for lunch on a quiet, windy day when noone was around except for the surf lifesaver watching an empty beach and some very noisy "whistling ducks".

The sun shone long enough to get some pretty photos of the beach and then it was straight ahead to Clairview futher down the Bruce Hwy. Clairview is a tiny town just off the highway by the sea and offers free camping overnight.

The sound of the highway is a little muted on the service road but the railway line runs alongside so the noise factor has to be an issue- we did ok with the sound of the ocean waves muffling the traffic noise to some extent.

On Thursday we headed off around 10am through cattle country to Rockhampton. We are definitley travelling too fast and we discuss a longer stopover somewhere soon.

We are not sure about the camping at Byfield National Park and made some enquiries at the Information Centre in Rockie who told us to try the Yepoon centre for more specific details, so next stop Yepoon on the beautiful Capricorn coast
