JOURNEY: Dubai to Hong Kong 5960 kms by air on Cathay

WEATHER: Hot in both places

Departing from Dubai airport was as slow as arriving. Queueing at Cathay counter we noted that our flight would be chockers. Slowly making progress to the check-in desk we asked ourselves why we didn't print boarding passes at Tricia's house. Closer to our turn Kath received a very big acknowledging smile from the Cathay supervisor and we soon knew why- the flight was over booked and we would be upgraded to Business Class and a bed!!! Wow!!

We were so excited that the long line through immigration did not matter; we remembered being upgraded on a flight with Qantas from Sydney to New York some years ago but that was just a big comfortable seat - this was a bed!!

We should tell the story of why we think Cathay chose us- most of the other passengers were Filipino workers returning home from Dubai and we were tourists!

Unfortunately the flight was just 7 hours so by the time we had enjoyed a fabulous 3 course meal and good wines, there really was only 3 hours to sleep before we would be awoken for breakfast. Can't believe how quickly that 7 hour flight passed.

Hong Kong airport- very efficient! We checked our backpacks into luggage lockers and caught the fast train into Hong Kong to see what we could see in 6 hours. Sheila had worked here in 1992 for 3 months so she steered us around the busy incredibly steamy city. With some instructions from the information centre we caught the fast train to the city but had some trouble locating Bus 15C which would take us to the very long queue for the tram to the Peak.

The peak offers high views over this crowded populous city and we wandered around with all the other tourists to enjoy the vistas.

Then back to town and a trip on the ferry to Kowloon, the old town with food and markets. In 5 hours we got a glimpse of this frantic Asian city.

Back at the airport there was time for a good dose of Chinese food before we found our way to the Qantas gate and our flight back to Australia.

Was our overseas journey of 7 months over? We were going back to where we started from and we felt rather sad. We talked about the journey- would we change anything in retrospect? No, not really or maybe a little longer in Madrid. We congratulated ourselves on choosing www.aiirbnb.com for our accommodation and for getting our itinerary in place before arriving in Spain.

For those interested our accommodation averaged $50 per night!!

We travelled by air, train, boat, bus and hire car, and learned that when in Europe check out Ryan Air for unbelievable airfares!

Greek Islands- Santorini and Paros lived up to expectations but Mykonos disappointed and Australian beaches spoil us!

Our flight to Melbourne began badly when our neighbouring passenger started chucking into his sick bag before we even took off and we had to move our least favourite seats by the galley in the exit aisle. We did the mind talk that we were going home so arriving sleepless was not too serious.
It was an 8 hour flight that was not too comfortable but the meals were ok and the red wine eased the pain!

"Upgrade" (ascender) what a nice word in any case. I am glad to hear that HK was a good choice and that you had a good time in the airplane: Bed, wine, nice food... you are really VIP girls!

I am sure you are going to miss Europe for a while, but the good news is that you had a great experience in this old continent and we are sure that you´ll come back many times.
Sheila, Alberto told me that you think in doing "El Camino de Santiago" that is a good reason to come bak to Europe. You both know that you have a place by us. For any trip you want to do in Spain you can have here your headquarters, leave your things and stay as long as you want.
Stay in touch and let us know how is everything after your come back.
Here is the beginning of summer, today is the summer solstice and we celebrate this weekend "el día de San Juan" with bondfires in the cities, i´ts a beautifull night and as you know, the first day of summer, the longest day and the shortest night.
The swimming pool in the block is now open and we like to get down and lay on the grass not forgetting snacks and cold beer!
I send you big hugs and wish you good luck now that you are back home.
Many kisses.

PS: Come back for more tapas!
