 JOURNEY: Calonge to Girona- 40kms

WEATHER: Cool, overcast with showers

Originally we had planned to stay in Girona, but accommodation was expensive and car parks had to be paid for. So today we drove into the city to wander and explore

The old part of this city dates back more than 2000 years and the highway between Rome and Cadiz in Roman times, Via Augusta ran through here. The narrow lanes and cobbled streets lie inside tall stone walls and we noticed a Jewish area, El Call which was a thriving commercial centre from 10th century until they were expelled in 1492.

The Gothic cathedral is large and very impressive.

There are several bridges crossing the River Onyar and rows of colourful houses stand riverside. We watched some photography students setting up to take pictures of the riverside.

Girona is a city of 95,000 people..

Like many places in Spain, the old city has endured many attacks and take-overs over the centuries and Roman and Gothic architecture survives today and attracts tourists to the city.
