The weather changed for the worst and we got to experience our second, third and fourth wet, windy and cloudy Spanish days.

Not to be deterred, out came the raincoats and the maps and walking shoes and we braved the conditions to explore this graceful city-perhaps because it is so close to France it seems so ooh-la-la at times. Some of the most expensive real estate in Spain lines the beautiful La Concha beach, fairly well deserted in the rain and blustery weather.

Our closest beach, Playa de Gros is wilder and surfies are busy there catching waves in wet suits, I might add. There are plenty of good cafes on our side of town, but we did visit the old town more often and found a great icecream shop and pastry place! Well we did say SS is all about food experiences.

As always, we enjoyed the narrow lanes and surprising architecture of the old town but the 19th century shopping district stood out elegantly and attractively as reminders of a richer grander Spain.

Royalty had holiday palaces here and so SS became a popular 19th century resort spot. By the way we just heard that the present King of Spain broke his hip while on a hunting trip to Botswana when he shot an elephant and had to be airlifted for urgent surgery- don't these royals ever learn to be senstive to the times-Spain is in economic crisis and animal welfare is on top of the list for many young people. And he goes hunting!

We walked around the promenade that follows the sea and found ourselves at the old funicular railway at the foot of the Monte Igueldo. Up we went and as the sky cleared we had a bird's eye view of the landscape. Impressive!

Despite the weather we managed to get a good perspective on this attractive city and yes we ate well, thank you!

By the way, in Spain you take your household garbage to the street bins and separate it for re-cycling; there is no house to house collection and everyone seems very conscientious!
