We were spending just two nights in this city and were enchanted by the location on a beautiful bay with two wonderful swimming beaches, Playa del Orzan and Playa de Riazor.
Cafe Santa Clara served a good breakfast of fresh OJ, toast and jam, churros and perfect espresso coffee which makes a nice change to our regular breakfast of oats.
There is a promenade right around the peninsula and we joined many others on this lovely sunny Sunday to complete the circuit- we estimate 10kms.
At the end of our walk we entered the old city and explored the attractions; it is quite small and it was now siesta time and museums and galleries were closed until 5pm.
We did find a great cafe for tapas and beer- Tapa Negra- and enjoyed an hour sitting in the outside area of the cafe and watching people go by!
A Coruna is a city of 220,000 people, combining the new and the old and attracting many tourists and you can understand why; there is a lot to see and do with the extra attraction of beaches.
The Tower of Hercules stands tall as the city symbol and the site dates back to the Romans who built a lighthouse here in the first century!
Must mention the "gallerias" glassed in balconies on buildings, that don't look quite right in that they look like an after- thought maybe they were! We read somewhere that these were added to buildings in the 19th century- makes sense and glass must have been cheap.
This was a happy day and on the way back Sheila met a "friend" who wanted us to fill in her lottery coupon for good luck. She chatted for a while until the sunshine was too much and she left us for a shady spot.
Back in our hotel, we caught up on emails, blogs etc. and had a light snack and bottle of our favourite red wine. Spanish summer time started last night so we have daylight until around 9pm.
