Weather: Mild and sunny

Accom: Tryp Hotel

Santiago de Compostela is the end of the pilgrims' ways. The French Way starts in France and is an arduous 800 kms long trek to the tomb of St James, the apostle in the cathedral in Santiago. For more than 1000 years pilgrims have made their way here for spiritual renewal, and today the walk still attracts walkers from all over the world. The challenge is a physical and mental one for most modern walkers.

Most of the walk is in northern Spain through rural and urban areas and many hikers can be seen around the city, some just completing the last 100kms of the walk to achieve the Camino de Santiago (The way of St James) certificate.

We walked the last kilometre backwards just for fun and followed the brass scallops set into the path as a guide. Kath wrapped her arms around the gold statue of St James in the cathedral as is custom; strangely there are priests sitting in corners of the cathedral to take confession and many people were waiting to kneel at the altar in front of St James' tomb.

Obviously the religious significance is relevant for some.

The old city is dominated by the enormous cathedral and we explored the streets and ate some really good seafood. We are travelling fast and through many different places so it will be hard to keep up with the blog!

We collected our hire car from Europcar at the railway station on Saturday morning after upgrading to a VW Golf and paying $700 for the month as against $400 for the smaller model; the main consideration as mentioned before was the boot size and it was perfect. Luggage safely stowed, a check of the dings and bumps on the vehicle (not accurate so the receptionist helped us list all the faults) and we were off to explore the north west coast of Spain on this cool and sunny day.

Besos mami
