JOURNEY: Wyndham, Halls Creek, Marys Pool (overnight) Fitzroy Crossing.

WEATHER: Cool overnight, warm, sunny days

MILEAGE @ Fitzroy Crossing:

After breakfast at Doon Doon, we took to the Great Northern Highway again.

The landscape was quite scenic and interesting but our favourite boab tree had gone, replace by some interesting grevilleas and a few trees we are not able to identify. the colours are beautiful and the earth is showing Kimberley red.

We had lunch at Halls Creek a small town with a mostly aboriginal population and an excellent information centre. We read the story of Russian Jack, who wheeled a mate 300+ kms to medical care in a wheel barrow- early 1900's. and there is a well sculptured remembrance statue in the grounds. the town sits on the northern end of the Great Sandy Desert and was the first town in WA to have a gold rush- 1885

Our overnight stop after 480 kms was a welcome sight and it was a very pretty spot, by the Mary River under tall cool trees. There were about 50 other campers at this FREE roadside stop and many people had recommended this place. Only downside were the number of generators in use but luckily all were turned off at dark, except for the couple parked next to us and Sheila politely asked him at what time he intended shutting down and shortly after that -silence reigned.

After a good night's sleep we headed out early and stopped to have breakfast at another very scenic road stop Ngumban Cliffs.

We reached our destination Fitzroy Crossing by noon, explored the town and planned our trip to Geiki National Park early tomorrow morning. FC is at the centre of the Kimberley's best cattle country and the river is one of Australia's largest. The population is predominately aboriginal.

Checked into the rather plush Fitzroy River Lodge campground and enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon.

Lois on

Hey Kath and Sheila
Thought it was about time I logged back on to check where you guys are - the Bungle Bungles look amazing.
I saw Alanna today - you would remember her Sheila. She is back from 5 years overseas and has settled back home at the Gold Coast. It was lovely to catch up and talk about old times and future plans.
I am off to the snow - Thredbo with the boys (Ross isn't coming) in just under 5 weeks - looking forward to it. Also have booked a March holiday with my dad including a cruise along the Murray River and if the cash holds out maybe a week or so away in Jan to Tassie with boys (including Ross this time). Hard to get the travel bug out of the system once it catches. Love to both of you.
