MILEAGE: 20198 kms

JOURNEY: Banka Banka, Renner Springs, Elliott, Newcastle Waters road stop

WEATHER: 20 degrees at 10.30, blue sky; reached 26 degrees later

The dead straight highway stretched ahead, sometimes very white and glary, and we stopped at the lovely camping spot, Banka- Banka a green oasis in the dry land but of course it was too early to camp so we got back into the van and peeled off the winter woollies and donned shorts and tee shirts. Apparently Renner Springs is considered the dividing line between the dry desert and the wet tropics and let us express our agreement because suddenly we were hot and the air was moist. Cold weather over?????

We were very happy to reach Elliott, our overnight stop, early afternoon but extremely disappointed when we pulled into the caravan park, which was littered with junk and rubbish in a poor state of repair and empty of customers.

The brochures presented the town as small and unassuming with a 'green' golf course, so you don’t expect to find a run down town with not one attractive feature to be found.

It should be said that the proprietor of the park, general store and post office was friendly and helpful but we decided to drive on and found a rest stop about 30 kms further on. It is Newcastle Waters Rest Stop and already at 3.30pm, pretty busy with caravans etc. We found a suitable spot with views over the land and introduced ourselves to our neighbours and this was where we stayed the night. Again it was quite windy but a lot warmer and the doona was put away!

Newcastle Waters is a large cattle station spreading beyond our camp spot and in 1930 the government sequestered a square mile of the station to create a little town called Newcastle Waters to supply drovers, but the town is now a road side ghost town as the drovers were replaced by road trains and rail.
