Journey: Lake Burbury, Queenstown, Strahan

Mileage Burbury: 12313 km

Weather: Fine sunny 18 degrees at 10am

Overnight: Strahan Golf Club $7

The drive into Queenstown is eerie and the landscape moonlike!! Bare dusty hills without green, stripped for a century by mining are so ugly they are somehow beautiful.

These hills were once covered with rainforest but when copper was discovered here in 1890 mining took precedence over everything including human health; the toxic emissions, we are told are closely managed now. Tourism has picked up a bit with the rail journey "Wilderness Coast” but we could not find much to enthuse about so headed off to Strahan through greener pastures.

Strahan is so pretty it almost seems unreal; it is set on the harbour and has a very famous convict history. Macquarie Island was the cruellest of convict colonies and this is where the Huon pine forests were first plundered for timber.

We found a lovely spot for coffee and snacks opposite the town, by the People's Park. Sheila was having a long telephone conversation, while Kath met a couple from Hobart, Sue and Dave who were so informed of Tassie’s history and politics, as well as knowledgeable campers that the hour passed quickly. Wow it was great to hear so much about the state and get some good travel tips too.

After a visit to the Information Centre, a walk around town and a meal of flathead (yum-yum) we headed for our overnight stop.

We parked the van at the Strahan Golf Club; about 1km from town and Sheila had a solo game while Kath caught up with Travelpod. The Club allowed self contained vans to camp on their grounds for $7 pn and Sheila paid an additional $10 for the golf. She has been spoilt after the Barnbougle experience and was less than impressed with the course. It was funny to watch pet dogs following the game with their owners.

Once again our cheap overnight stay was disrupted by a noisy party -40th birthday- at the club house and sleep was intermittent.
