Monday 1 March 2010 and hey! it is the first day of Autumn

Journey: Westbury, Deloraine, Ross, Bothwell, Hamilton ….Lake St Clair

Weather: 2 degrees as high as 22 degrees

Long drive today, enhanced with the sounds of Frankie Vallie, Michael Buble, Harry Conick Jnr and Norah Jones.

The drive was made longer due to wrong information provided by a very slack Park Ranger who when asked if the A5 highway was sealed all the way from Deloraine to Bothwell replied…"Yep, all the way”. We mentioned that our map was showing that a section of this highway was not sealed…her reply…”you must have an old map”!!!

Luckily when we stopped at Deloraine and inquired at the Visitor Info Centre they told us that it was not, and recommended that we drive down the A1. We were also intending to cut through from Miena to Bronte Park along the Marlborough Highway but again were advised against doing this as it was a rough road. So, the trip went from being a roughly 200kms to a 422kms!

Stopped at Ross to stretch the legs and then Bothwell - to see the oldest golf course in the southern hemisphere, called RATHO; must say it did not look real inviting. The road between Bothwell and Hamilton was through a very dry district and looked surreal.

Sheila was keen to reach Lake St Clair rather than camp elsewhere overnight so we soldiered on and reached our destination at 7pm. We were able to find a lovely, quiet corner under tall trees and here we stayed for 3 coolish nights.
