Showers, cloudy, cool around 15 degrees.

Dover, Huonville, Petchys Bay, Cygnet, Gordon

Mileage: Huonville-9074 Gordon-9183

It is good to be in the van and on the road again. We set out in drizzling rain and changing skies, stopped at Huonville to stock the larder and took the long but stunning way for Bruny Island.

Cygnet seems a more artistic and creative town than the others we have visited in the south; just an observation and being aware that they hold a folk festival in January each year.

The road connecting the towns above was narrow and mostly gravel but the scenery along the other side of the Huon River and D'Entrecasteaux was spectacular.

We had heard the area was a blueberry growing area and we were not disappointed. We stopped off at an organic farm where the owner gave us a tour of the bushes and filled us in with information about growing and picking.

The picking is very time consuming and the berries on one branch ripen at different times so that explains the high price of the berry. Sheila bought a kilo $20 and we had them all eaten by Monday night.

Tasmania has been cherry, berry heaven!

We had researched a stop over spot on the way to Kettering where we catch the ferry across to Bruny Island.

Tasmania has a great number of free camping areas and our book "Camps 5" listed the perfect overnight stopover- Gordon a tiny town with two free camp sites- one overnight only, the other for extended stays.

It was a great spot right on the Channel facing Bruny Island. There were a number of motor homes at both sites and one family of very hardy tent campers.

The night was wild, wet, cold and windy but we slept well and took some time getting up from the warmth of the bed the next morning.
