MYALL LAKES NP Neranie campground via

Mileage 6792

$0 PN

We took "The Lakes Way" and enjoyed the watery environment and small towns.

Cold and windy day 20*

Arrived early afternoon and because of the cold and windy conditions, it was check out the camp and settle inside the van.

The camp site was compact and welcoming and each site was spacious and at lakes edge.

We were disappointed that there were no walks from here so decided we would only stay overnight and move on early morning. Our camp neighbour assured us that the water in the lake was warm but the wind whipped up waves and the idea of swimming was unappealing.

Suddenly a group of 8 kayakers and canoeists landed on shore amid the inclement conditions and told us they had set out from Nerong on the previous morning in calm and sunny conditions! We admired their stamina and watched them set up camp.

For any readers of this blog who like a bit of history:

(For those not interested skip the next 2 paragraphs)

Reading from the national park's signage we learnt that the Myall Lakes cover 10000 hectares and the water remains in the lake for 400-800 days before it flows down the Myall River to Hawks Nest. The paperbark trees give the water a brown colour and make a striking back drop to the lake. Apparently the sea level rose 100m, 6000 years ago, forcing generations of the Worimi people to move 7 kms inland. Evidence that the coastline changes all the time!

White settlers saw the lakes as transport opportunity for timber logging many years later. When sand mining threatened to reshape the coastline and bring in a range of developments in the 1960s the conservationists got to work lobbying the NSW government and by 1977 the lakes and coastal dunes were protected as national park between Forster and Nelson Bay. Once again thank you to those people!!!
