Where I stayed

Flag of Australia  , New South Wales,
Monday, October 5, 2009

The day had come, after years of dreaming and months of planning that we emptied the house and handed over the property to the real estate agent. She diligently conducted an inventory and condition report, we gave up the keys
and we became "houseless" but not “homeless”.

We had invited our new tenants, Malin, Michael and Alexander from Sweden, to our street farewell party to meet the neighbours and check out their future abode with us, and felt happy about handing over our house to them for 2 years.

People ask how it felt to pack up and store our stuff and then downsize into the van; well it felt great!
Our connection and belonging to the house was missing when we visited our tenants a few days later and in fact, we felt a wonderful sense of freedom and adventure. While we will miss our Brisbane friends, we do anticipate meeting new and interesting friends on the road. In fact, high on our list of things to accomplish on this journey, is making contact with many people and listening to their stories.
We spent a few days enjoying the fabulous hospitality of our friends Hazel and Peter in their lovely house at Mount Crosby, while we sorted out some loose ends and said some last goodbyes, before setting off in the van on Monday October 5 2009.

Because of the rush to finalise things and with Sheila only returning from a month's trip to Puerto Rico to visit her family five days before we vacated the house, we definitely had not fully organized our van and itinerary. Our itinerary has been complicated by Kath’s need to return to Brisbane for dental work three times over the next month.
We have a laptop with Big Pond wireless modem, Tom Tom for navigation, Ipod Touch, 3G cell phone with Telstra plan and antenna to get extra coverage and guess what???, we can hardly ever get coverage because our preferred camping spots are national parks. We will make a renewed effort to keep up this blog so that we can keep in touch. Hopefully we will get better and more interesting with the blog as we go.  This communication  gear takes up one whole cupboard of equal space to our individual clothes cabinets. We are proud of this fact; some of you will understand why.

Leaving Brisbane late on Monday Oct 5, we decided to overnight at our favourite, not yet developed, nearby town of Brunswick Heads; this lovely town has a surf beach, a calm sheltered swimming beach and a gorgeous kayaking River. Great pub and we can recommend a beer and burger from there at days end, listening to some good live music. You can’t beat Yami’s for mid-east vegetarian breakfast or lunch; we just love Yami’s falafel pockets and Sticky Fingers is the restaurant for a really crispy gourmet pizza.  We felt “Brunny” was a happy start to a long journey.
At Ballina
Our outside van light blew all the lights last night; where is the fuse box? One of the slide-up window screens lost its slide, so we   stopped at Ballina Campers to get a warranty check up and repair. Quickly attended to, we were soon on our again.
