Tuesday 27th March

Woke super early to say a drowsy goodbye to Julz n Mic who left for their train to Paris around 5am. After afew more hours sleep I got up and had my breaky, packed my stuff and headed to the train station where I got my train to Leiden.  I arrived in Leiden and found lockers to store my stuff and got a bus out to Keukenhof which is like a Dutch floriade (for those who don't know what that is… it’s a whole lotta flowers)!  Unfortunately it was the very start of the 'flower festival’ so not many flowers had opened up yet, including the fields of tulips. oh well.  However there were still hundreds of amazing flowers including lots of tulips and big ‘greenhouse’ areas with amazing huge arrangements.  Also at Keukenhof was a big old-school windmill and a big wooden clog that I got to sit in.  (**see Keukenhof entry for pictures!**). After a full walk around of the place I got the bus back to the station and got the next train to Den Haag (or The Hauge).  Den Haag is a cute (not so small) ‘beach’, ‘surf’ town.  My hostel is near the beach and has a very chilled out surfer atmosphere – would be great if it weren’t for the triple beds! (how I loathe triple bunks)… Anyway I arrive, checked in, and spent the afternoon relaxing in the common area (which has fifa constantly playing, a fooseball table, a cute café, an outdoor lounge area and seats inside which are from old airplanes which is cool).  After much sitting doing nothing I left the hostel to go have dinner and stay with an old school mate – chantell potter – who has been living here for around 2 years now.  I arrived at her very central, very nice place and had a great time catching up and reminiscing over a delicious homemade roast chicken and vegie dinner.  After dinner and wine and cake and more chat it was time for bed so I was able to crash on their uber-comfy couch for the night

Wednesday 28th March

Today woke up after a comfy nights sleep on the couch and had vegemite toast and hagelslag bread for breakfast – perfect breakfast in my eyes!  Then headed out to explore Den Haag.  First went to the train station to find out about tram tickets and on the way did some shopping up the street.  Then I went to the Mauritshuis Museum which holds Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ painting and Rembrandts’ ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicoleas Tulp’ (which we learnt on our tour, was painted in Amsterdam) as well as many more Rembrandts and other famous paintings.
Next I went to Eschers’ Museum which was very different  - Escher is famous for his prints/drawings of patterns and depths and dimensions and impossible situations (such as the staircase that goes in a circle, or the waterfall that comes from itself etc). The museum was also a 'chandelier musem' - see below for pictures!
After the museums I walked through the town and towards the beach.   On the way I walked through some nice parks and past some amazing buildings such as the ‘peace palace’ – Den Haag is actually the second home to the UN.
I arrived at the beach after a long walk and had a nice relaxing lay in the sun for a while.  The beach is actually really nice especially on such a gorgeous day.  There is sand which is nice (a lot of sand) and there are loads of cute beach shack café places with outdoor comfy seating which I imagine would be a perfect relaxing weekend place in summer.
I then went back to my hostel for some tea and relaxing and to catch up on a much behind blog!  (apologies)… In the evening I again headed over for a curry dinner at Chantelle’s place which was lovely but headed back to the hostel this time for the night – we’ll see how these triple bunks compare.

Thursday 29th March

Woke up after a good sleep, so the triple bunks weren’t that bad, mind you there was only two people in them… Had breaky at the hostel where they had hagelslag on offer! Then packed my stuff and checked out and headed on the tram to the train station.  Got the first tram fine, waited for the second one, got on it fine but somehow managed to miss my stop (the tram didn’t miss it, I just missed it due to daydreaming) so got off two stops too late so had to wait ages for one going back.  Anyway I eventually got to the train station and decided to go straight to Rotterdam.

To be continued...
