Katerre Expedition

Rio Negro & the Amazon

Novo Airão – Anavilhanas- Jaú – Barcelos – São Gabriel – Middle and Upper Rio Negro.

"From the boat you could see the children running around franticly and shouting the arrival to the four winds." Terra da Gente magazine, describing the Anchorage at a riverside community at Rio Jau. “Katerre works with a boat equipped with books and maps regarding the Amazon and a kitchen that provides a wide variety of the local cuisine.” Unibanco Amazonia Guide.

Climb aboard for an unforgettable adventure in the Amazon

The attractions of the wild and the culture of the riverside communities mix together to create a journey without equal. The itinerary also includes the Anavilhanas Archipelago.

Barcelos Beaches 8 days. You will fall in love with the fresh water beaches, the islands of the world’s largest river archipelago, Mariuá, and the wildlife, with numerous species of birds, reptiles and fishes. The itinerary includes the Anavilhanas Archipelago, Jaú National Park, and Barcelos.

Middle Rio Negro 8 days. The world’s largest river archipelago, Mariuá, and a ecologic preservation sanctuary kept safe thanks to the long distance that separates it from the State capital, Manaus. The surrounding communities give a human touch to a place where Nature still reigns. Includes the Anavilhanas Archipelago.

Upper Rio Negro 10 days.  A place with different culture and values that breeds a different kind of man. An Amazon that grows over a rocky ground, with a landscape without equal, and mountains at the riverside. Home of the Beré, Baniwa, Yanomammi, Tukano, and Tariano native peoples. The journey begins in São Gabriel, navigating 1,000 km (620 miles) down Rio Negro.

Exploration Expeditions 8 to 12 days. In 2010, they launched an expedition to Tambor, at the far ends of Jaú National Park, and an expedition to the Serra do Aracá hill range, where you will find “Pai Nosso” (“Father”), Brazil’s tallest waterfall. Get on board with them in these unforgettable itineraries never before seen by tourist eyes.

Know Katerre´s infrastructure:

Boats – Katerre´s boats have different living spaces for different types of clients.

The 52ft Awapé combines the regional style with comfort for up to 10 passengers for long expeditions. Don’t miss the chance to get to know it.

The Katerre-Açu, their newest boat, is 64ft long and has large functional and leisure areas for up to 16 passengers, for a more luxurious option. Check out the design on their website –

The Peiara is a smaller boat equipped for shorter, 2 to 3 days expeditions, only for couples.

Crew – Katerre´s guides are an important part of an expedition. More than just knowing the region, they are helpful, always in a good mood, and, most of all, in sync with the vibe of the group. The Skipper is responsible for the success of the trip in all its aspects. He handles the crew, plans the route, and his chief officer is the boatman. The Cook is among the people responsible to make your stay in the boat as pleasant as possible, and his chief officer is the cleaning lady.

Katerre´s Vision

Social-Ecologic Itineraries - The wild is a very important attraction in their tours; so are the people who live in it. In their genuine cultural expressions, based on the fruits bore by the forest, one can find beauty and simplicity without equal. There is a lot to learn from this exchange with them, and it is in this exchange that friendship bonds are formed and spontaneous moments arise, whether on a football match, during a conversation or in many other activities.

Low Impact Tourism - To know and get the spirit of the true Amazon Rainforest, you got to go by boat. When you disembark in an isolated community, in a sanctuary of parrots and macaws, in a desert beach with gull nests, turtle eggs, or get in a canoe in a creek, you must keep your impact to a minimum. For that reason, Katerre operates only with small groups in boats with low fossil pollutant emission, low noise level, and organic trash disposal. With exclusive itineraries, many of the places you will visit receive only Katerre´s clients.

Your Wellbeing First - Remote river expeditions require experience and know-how to make sure nothing goes wrong. All passengers are covered by individual travel insurance policies. The guides are trained in first-aid and able to use anesthetics and suturing. The boat is fumigated prior to every expedition, and it can be equipped with satellite phone for emergencies. Not to mention the familiarity the crew has with the places, communities, and people you will visit. This is Katerre!

Katerre around the globe

Communitarian Tourism - “The river-folk of the Amazon are learning to receive a new kind of visitor, one that is interested in their daily lives as well as the wildlife treasuries around them. This is good for the environment, the communities and the outfitters alike, and unforgettable for the tourist…” Social-Environmental Itineraries are the signature trait in Katerre´s outfits in the entire Rio Negro basin. There is an article published by the “Terra da Gente” magazine, the photographer/reporter Adriano Gambarini successfully captured the spirit of those expeditions. Of course, every person has a different view and a different perception, but it’s a good idea to let yourself be taken by the simplicity of a people who enjoy having you over and consider you their friends. “Journey to the Hinterlands” is the result of his experiences in one Katerre´s 8-day itinerary to Barcelos, in Middle Rio Negro.
