The only downside to such a late bus (it was the cheapest option) was that we arrived in Florianopolis in the dark at around 6pm. Not being city people, we decided to head straight for the smaller more touristy areas of the island, so the nearesr is Lagoa Conceicao.
With a name and address of a hostel in our pocket, we navigated our way on the puclic buses to the small town and found the first hostel- Lagoa Backpackers. They put us in a room with 4 other boys who had thrown their things all over our beds and the floor and the smell was not dissimilar to my brothers bedroom- no offence Owen but you know it's true! I said to Jamie that we would not be staying any longer than we had to in that filthy hostel so first thing the next morning, we headed out into the rain for another option
We are on the island of Florianopolis, where there is a huge forest clad mountain range running through the centre of the island with stunning beaches fringing it on all sides. With 42 beaches in total, there is more than enough choice ranging from surftastic crazy waves, to beautiful calm waters of sheltered bays. We have opted for a central location next to the lagoon where there is easy access and good buses to all parts of the island.
There are two other people in our dorm (loads of others in different dorms), Piper who is from the States, and Daniel who is from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. He has a car and offered to take us around the island today while the sun was shining. We visited loads of beaches all up the coast, saw boats that had washed up on shore in the storm last night and were sinking in both water and sand, regardless of the efforts made to pull them out.
There was a surf competition on one of the beaches so we stopped and watched that for a while which was most impressive! Also saw massive sand dunes, and strange out of this world looking swamps. The weather was great all day, we had sunshine with a few clouds, a little wind and we were almost tempted to put our swimwear on!
All of us exhausted and explored out, we returned to the hostel. Jamie and I went to the supermarket to buy some dinner- on returning, the heavens opened once more and for the second day running, we were soaked to the bone!
One hot shower and a nice cup of tea later, we are playing cards and enjoying the company! I think we'll be holing up here for a few days!
