Where I stayed

I was on my computer at work today when my Italian mentor caught me smiling at something on the screen.
"La vita bella," he said.
"What?" I replied.
"La vita bella," he repeated. "Your life is good."

It has been an unimaginably long summer full of recovery and patience, but I'm happy (and proud) to say that my mentor's words are finally true. Perhaps they always have been.

I've set up this blog to give you a hint as to my whereabouts for the next four months or so. I'll be traveling with a newfound gem, Miss Shannon Foley, on a sprightly adventure around the world. I've lost count of how many countries we'll be visiting, but as long as the backbone remains ripe with adventure, we're both in this for the long haul. You can follow the map on this blog to keep track of where we are.

In the three short weeks before we take off, my 'to do' list continues to grow. Planning trips and hostels months in advance is plenty, but on top of that I'm also trying to get my scraps in order to apply for grad school this Fall. I have my eye on an International Global Health MPH program in Infectious Disease at Boston University. Assuming all goes as planned, I'll be starting there in January 2011. Well, that's the plan as of today. Knowing me, the sequence of goals will just shift again tomorrow.

In the end, I don't think it was luck that got me here. There continues to be much love and patience from my growing support system as I start this next stage of my life. It's crazy to think that it's not a party anymore (if it ever was), but there's no such thing as life "beginning here." As creatures left to our own devices, luck doesn't get us anywhere. Here's to the journey.

THANK YOU to everyone who had faith and the confidence to boomerang. I'll keep it arbitrary and end with this: Looking back, I can't believe for a second that this is where I get to be: in the best part of the world - everywhere in the world.

Here are the countries:

South Africa
