Hey all!
Just to let you know that we're at our first hostel in Hong Kong now. The journey all went to plan (amazingly!) - no luggage was lost and no severe delays, so that's a relief!
It's a reasonable hostel - up a very large hill, and with some great views from places. Everyone seems to be very quiet, but we have spoken to a few other English speakers here and there. The Cantonese isn't going too well - everyone seems to speak English to us anyway, and we haven't learnt a lot anyway!
We arrived yesterday evening, and we were exhausted. We had to go into town on the shuttle bus for an hour or so though to get something to eat. Then we just had a shower and went to bed very sleepy. We both woke up early this morning (unintentionally!), and set off for Lamma island on a ferry from Central piers. It was a beautiful island, with no cars, just the odd golf buggy for carrying things around. There were loads of seafood restaurents in the little village where the boat came in, and they all had so many fish in glass tanks outside. There were huge fish and lobsters and other things swimming around in these tanks - it was impressive. From there we walked for a couple of hours across the island to a bigger town, stopping on the way for ice lollies and a look at some lovely views. There were some great beaches, but quite small and we didn't go in today.
After a wander through the town we arrived in, we caught another ferry back to Central, and spent the rest of the afternoon exploring there. We found a supermarket for some food, and a great roof terrace that was open for public use. It had fantastic views across to Kowloon, and had a great roof garden with trees and scultures and fountains.
We tried to climb the Bank of China Tower, but were a couple of hours too late, so sat by the sea front chatting, before getting the shuttle bus back here at 6pm ish.
Tonight we're heading back into town for a trip on the Star Ferry across to Kowloon to see the skyline at night. Tomorrow we might go up Victoria Peak, so long as it's not too busy.
I'll add some pictures in when I find the connector for my camera - I know it's somewhere in the bottom of my bag...
Bye for now,
Kate and Alison x
