Big city to tiny (or rather Grande) island
Sep 07, 2011
My second day on Ilha Grande wasn't such a tropical paradise. It rained so I decided to go for a hike. After two hours I came across a beach witch resembled a scene from "The Birds" with lots and lots of vulture type birds on it - I don't need to say that I didn't stay long. I covered 16km in total and was soaked to the bone!
Here's hoping for some better weather in Paraty.
So, Ilha Grande is the opposite of Rio. It's quiet, the people are lovely and very relaxed. Despite a grey boat trip over to the island, the second day was beautiful so I went on a boat trip where I did a bit of snorkeling. The sea wasn't that clear but the views from the boat were amazing - it felt like a real tropical paradise. To top the day off I relaxed with a couple of beers at a candle-lit beach cafe (Cafe do Mar). So nice was it that I decided to try the fish ... only this time it was fresh and cooked to perfection with no batter or salt in sight! However, I had no idea what it was and when I asked was told it was Marlin which I later found out - according to Wikipedia - that "Marlin are rarely table fare, appearing mostly in fine restaurants". Not bad for 30 Reals in a beach cafe!
