Seeing the city this time
Entry 46 of 55 | show all | print this entry |
Though we planned to do lots of sightseeing while we were in Bangkok for a few days, we postponed seeing the Imperial Palace again. We seem to always have more pressing things to do. This time it was market-ing, tailor-ing, parent-calling, and pack-downsizing.
We spent almost all day Sunday at the Chatuchak weekend market where if there is one of something, there are probably 200 of that same thing. And 100 of the same thing but in a different color. It is so overwhelming, but we powered through it. We had been before, but hadn't been to the pet section, so we spent a while wandering through aisles of parakeets and newly hatched (not their most attractive time) parrots, and then onto dogs and cats. The tiny puppies were constantly being blown dry and fluffed with a brush - the vendors seemed to think that fluffy puppies sell best. There were a lot of fish tanks, and small turtles, and grubs, and even fighting crickets. We wandered through aisles of second-hand (or several-hand) t-shirts and jeans and converse shoes. We looked at "tourist clothes" - baggy cotton fishermen pants, printed floaty tanktops, too-big shoulder bags. Wow. So much stuff. We had so much accumulated stuff already waiting for us at home that we didn't buy too much more. Our big purchase was another backpack (not too big, not too small, we thought) that we could put our combined clothes and toiletries in for the next leg of the trip. We did, after an afternoon of sorting and packing and repacking, manage to fit everything into the new bag. But it was stuffed - what about the stuff we'll buy in Laos? We ended up leaving the new bag at Steve's, with Christopher's big backpack, and just bringing my big bag - enough room for stuff we have now and whatever small things we might add. Whew.
Christopher also did a bit of tailor-business. He had thought about getting a suit made in Bangkok, but chose (for now, at least) to just get a pair of slacks and a more casual linen shirt - just the color of his eyes. Perfect.
We made reservations and plan for the next week or more in Thailand, and waved goodbye to Bangkok again.
