Off again, in a new direction

We did a lot of planning and talking while we were here, especially in the days following Thaipusam. We were working on how best to see the things we wanted to see in Indonesia in just a short time and on just a small budget. One of the things that drew our attention was seeing an orang-utan sanctuary on the island of Sumatra. We also talked about seeing the Buddhist stupas at Borobudur outside Yogyakarta, and the islands of Bali and Lombok. We worked on several approaches to routes from KL through Singapore and across the two thousand miles of Indonesian archipelago. Eventually we found that there is another orang-utan sanctuary on the island of Borneo, in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Sabah also has opportunities for lots of jungle exploration and nature-seeing, including lots of marine animals to see snorkelling on islands nearby. So, we decided that although it was hard to give up on the idea of going to Indonesia, that in fact going to Sabah would mean getting to see lots of things in a more easily-navigated space. And then we agonized about that decision some more, just to make sure it was the right thing. Then we bought plane tickets.
And so we're off, to visit Singapore just for a day before we fly from Johor Bahru, at the southern tip of Malaysia, to Kota Kinabalu, on the western coast of Sabah. We plan to be there until February 23rd, when we'll return from there to Bangkok. I hope that we'll be able to update you before we get back to Thailand, but I don't know what email access will be like out there in the wilds of Borneo...
love kate (and Christopher)
