We took a very leisurely drive to Cameron because it was so close and also because I had to go to the pharmacy to get some anti-itch stuff which is not that good. Still trying to get a swim we stopped along the roadside a number of times to see whether we could get down to Oak Creek. The creek was very shallow so a swim was always going to be out of the question but we had difficulty even trying to get down there for a paddle
On the way we stopped at some restrooms attached to a viewing spot and there were a number of stalls run by Navajo people selling all sorts of jewellery. We were there for two hours! I bought a really nice bracelet and ring which I probably shouldn't have but I was assured by Henrietta (who made them and didn't just sell them) that they were original and not available anywhere else. Irene found some lovely pieces as well.
To our surprise we found ourselves driving on Route 66 which did not appear on our directions. It was a woo hoo moment!!
We eventually got to Cameron and had the rudest person check us into the hotel. She was like this girl who used to work in Cronshaw's in Bunbury - certainly not put there for her charm. The woman before us just wanted to check some directions and the clerk just sat on the desk on the other side shouting at her. At least when we said we had a booking she got up and did some work.
We were early enough to drive to Grand Canyon (about 45 mins away) to see the sunset - it was further than expected but well worth it. The colours here are more subtle than Sedona but still really lovely. When we got back I went looking for a beer but because this place is on an indian reservation you cannot buy alcohol. It's no big deal but after a hot day a beer is often the best thirst quencher.
Time for bed and I am hoping there are no bed bugs here and we have not bought them with us!
