(To borrow the title of a novel written by Madeleine L'Engle.)

Its difficult to explain what it feels like to run your fingers along stone walls that have stood there for ages. To drag your bare feet along dewy, green terraces dug into a mountain and falling off into oblivion. To begin to paint the sort of picture it would take even Picasso months to paint because he would spend too much time trying to stare without blinking.

It was an overwhelming feeling to stand first, only looking at the ruins of Machu Picchu and then, being amongst them. Im still letting it all sink in and it feels bigger than my body. This breathlessness (from the altitude here in Cusco) is probably very appropriate for the general overall emotions Im swimming in.

Tammy and I have seen a lot in a very short time. This afternoon, I watched her drive away to the airport to catch her flight back to Lima and onto Toronto. Like one does after spending that much time with someone and sharing a sort of intimacy only traveling partners in crime can (especially sick ones! oi!!), I felt somewhat bereft. Like I was waving away a bit of my fun, courage, inspiration. Thanks for coming Tammy, Im so so happy you did.

I opted not to take my flight from Cusco to Lima because I am actually much closer to Bolivia here than I am in Lima and really, Lima irritates me. So tonight my laundry is getting done (mercifully!!), Im bunking with an Argentinian I have yet to meet and tomorrow night Ill be on an overnight bus to La Paz, Bolivia. Where I will not get a break from this lung-ache because La Paz is, I believe, even higher than Cusco.

Enjoy the pictures, they tell it better than I can.
Much love,
xox K

PS - I fricken LOVE my camera!! Thanks HR gang. It rocks!

Very cool pictures, glad that you are able to share with the rest of us up here in the frozen north. We got over 20cm of snow on Sunday, so enjoy your weather...
