We got to Berlin, parked the car, ate some lunch, and went straight to the touristy sites. Seeing as this was the third time in a month that I had been to Berlin, I pretty much knew where to go. We walked down by Humbolt University and continued until we ran into the Brandenburger Tor, which is the recognizable landmark of Berlin. There is so much history there, it is amazing. Both Napoleon's and Hitler's armies passed through there. The Berlin Wall used to run right by there. Now, of course, there is a Starbucks that is about 200 meters away
After seeing the Brandenburger Tor, we went to the nearby Jewish Memorial and walked through it. Maria did her crazy video of herself running between the stones, waving. It was funny, even if it wasn't quite appropriate. After this, we decided to walk down to this monument that was probably 3 km away (yes, I've been in Europe too long when everything is now in kilometers). I'm not exactly sure how far it was, but it was a good walk.
After seeing the monument up close and personal (not sure of the name of the monument) we made our way back to Checkpoint Charlie and saw the wall along the way. All of the stuff regarding the Berlin Wall really intrigues me. Maybe it is because I can remember when the Cold War was still going on and remember the wall falling. I don't know, I just think it is cool. I can't imagine what it was like living in Berlin before the wall fell.
After seeing Checkpoint Charlie, we bought some postcards, then found our way back to the car. We ate a traditional German meal, which was great and drove back to Prague. Jerry drove, which I was grateful for. Fortunately the snow had stopped so it was a fairly smooth ride home. I know Jerry and Maria weren't expecting to see Berlin, so it was a nice little addition to their trip.
