for the number 5 about: individual travler that you need Confirmation of hotel arrangements from authorized Russian travel company, this is not necessary.
for the invitatin letter i advice you to don't go threw a hostel or hotel in Russia, but just do it online, it's the same price and it takes 5 minutes, when you go threw a hotel in Russia, you will have to give all the details from your credit card and do it by fax and it can take few days before you have the papers.

All documents and the visa should cost about 70 euros. except for americans citizens. i will be about 120 euros.
Mongolia:
For the visas for Russia from Mongolia, you must go threw an agency
There is only 2 in Ulaanbaatar, htere are in the same building.

Important:
About registration you have 3 working days to do it, in any cities you will go more than 3 days.
