Tomorrow we are taking a jeep tour up to Yankee Boy Basin to see the wildflowers. I am anxious to compare them to what we saw in Crested Butte. Then on to Moab, Utah. It's been hot this entire trip and I looked up the Moab forcast and it is supposed to be 106 tomorrow!
We said that we could make a three hour drive into an all day excursion and we did that today. We left Crested Butte around 8:00 am for a 3 hour drive to Ouray but we didn't get there until about 4:30! We stopped a few times of course. We drove along the Blue Mesa Lake and made a couple of photo stops. Then I consulted the map and saw that we were going right by Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. A detour was in order. We had already stopped in Gunnison for some bread and drinks so after doing the canyon overlooks we found a picnic table in the shade of a Pinyon Pine. It was hot up at the rim of the canyon and the shade felt great. We enjoyed a leisurely picnic of PB & J's. We also saw the biggest squirrel any of us had ever seen. It was HUGE. We later looked him up and saw he was a Rock Squirrel. It was a pretty good day for wildlife sightings. We saw three deer on our way out from Crested Butte, Cliff Swallows and their nests, a cool raven, big horn sheep and long horn steer (for Jayne)
