Greetings all from New York City! We are on day five of our travels and loving it so far. We have walked all over Manhattan and well and truly broken in those big hiking boots that seemed like a good purchase last week! The socks which cost 18 euro a pair were well worth it...Rob still hasn't changed the first pair...Karen needs nose plugs!
We arrived on Monday, got ripped off by an Al Pacino style taxi driver but eventually got to our hotel. It's just down the street from Ground Zero so we headed around there first and then strolled through Wall St and the financial district. On the way back we found a cool local bar with nice cheap beer and...Rob's favorites...Buffalo Wings! Rob is now on a mission to find the best buffalo wings in the country.
Day two we headed to Empire State Building... no queues at all which was great! However it was really cloudy and windy so we didn't have a great view from the top. However we did see the biggest Rat in history (check out the link to the photos below for evidence)! For the rest of the day we strolled up to Times Square, and Central Park, where we met the self proclaimed "New York Poet" Willie G, who sold us a Yankees cap off the back of a lorry and kindly gave us some of his "poetry". Wednesday we did a trip up to Niagara Falls which was brilliant. The weather was fab and the river at the end of the falls was still frozen so it looked spectacular. We got lunch in a hotel across from the falls on the 13th floor restaurant which had great views of the falls...which of course called for a glass of champagne to celebrate :) Also on our trip to Niagara we got the weirdest crisps ever on the flight up... the flight was with an airline called Jet Blue so what colour were the crisps??? Yes ..BLUE!! WE think they were made from rotten potatoes, we're flying with Jet Blue to Washington tomorrow so will try and get another packet for scientific research! Back to the buffalo wings mission - we flew into Buffalo, New York state on our trip to the falls, which is the home of the original Buffalo Wings (hence the name!) So Rob has a bottle of the sauce from the place that claims to have come up with the original recipe to try out when we get home.
Yesterday we got the Staten island ferry, walked the Brooklyn Bridge and strolled around Chinatown and the Lower East Side Tenement museum. Today is our last day and we've spent it shopping...well Rob splashed out on an Itouch in the apple store on 5th avenue. We're heading to see Chicago tonight on Broadway and then flying out bright and early tomorrow morning to Washington DC! We have some photos up on http://www.flickr.com/ - just search for a person called karenandbobbytravels and you should find them! Till next time.. Slan! More thumbnails ...
