Hoi An was our next stop in our Vietnam adventure and we were looking forward to it. Kylie had heard so much about how you can get clothes and boots made to fit and she was very excited ! (you can get anything custom fit!! ANYTHING!!) It was a bumpy but not an overnight ride on the bus (whew), 5 hours if I recall. Which proved to be a little uncomfortable anyways, because the sleeper bus has no real seats, so now instead of not sleeping on the bus, we were unable to sit up straight, ironic!
As soon as we got into Hoi An we were not disappointed as it was evident that there were clothing shops on every street. And I mean every street, this is Hoi An, and everyone knows it. On a block of shops 9 out of 10 are clothing shops, the other is a corner store, or a place selling hardware goods, from fans, to motocycle tires. And it was hot, 38-43 C, very HOT !!! So we decided to find the hotel that was the farthest away, and walk there! With our backpacks! ( It seemed that I always find a great place to stay but it is always alot further away than we would prefer! Whoops!)
2 km later (at least!!) we got to our lovely Hotel, Green Field Hotel, and we were very pleased as a wonderful Vietnamese girl in a vietnamese dress, colour green, showed us the most expensive room in the joint. 400,000 dong was just a little out of our price range ($40 dollars) so we opted for the 200,000 dong room, with a view of a wall (but no scenery like Hue). We had TV and a small fridge, and wireless internet, how nice. But I didn't tell you the best thing about our hotel, and the reason we decided to walk so far to get here, it has a POOL !!!! And nothing is better for a hot day then swimming in a pool! (MAN!! What a lifesaver!!)
After a few days of walking around and discretely looking into clothing shops,(you can't look too eager as they will flock to you like ants to a peanut butter sandwich) Kylie decided on a nice jacket to custom fit, (equalled out to be only 20 bucks!! At a store on Johnston it would be like $200!!) and a pair of boots, again custom fit and custom design.(with my wacky feet it is awesome to have a pair that will fit perfectly! and you can bring in a picture of what you want and they will do it up for you!!) She saved so much money compaired to home. (totally) I had a couple of button up shirts made, exact copies of one shirt I brought from the Gap, pretty cool. We decided if you planned it right, you could come here on a vacation and buy all of your clothes for a year and still return home ahead, money wise! (hmmm just that flight may be a stretch...but overall absolutley worth it!)
(Hoi An was very pretty too! It had a canal that went through a side of the old town. All of the funky resaurants and art galleries were along there. Pretty much we just walked around and explored. It was nice as this was one of the first places in Vietnam that had sidewalks, and no car zones so you could walk on the street. The roads were tree lined, well most of them were. Simple and pretty and a super shopping mecca!)
