Sunday March 23rd 6:02pm (written by Keir but with Kylie's 2 cents!!)
Well after a super bumpy, non-air-conditioned bus ride from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong, we made it in about 2 and half hours (through movie-esque rice patties with the little huts in the middle) Although it wasn't air-conditioned, with all of the windows opened and it wasn't really that hot anyways, but I swear to god the bus had no shocks at all!!!  ( I think my butt is bruised and you could see to the ground through the floor in some spots) I guess taking the bus straight from Chiang Mai to here would have been on a nicer bus, but what fun is that? This is supposed to be an adventure, RIGHT!! (right!)
We are staying within sight of the Mekong River in cute little bungalows up on the hill, with 2 single beds, our own bathroom, the sheets are clean (hopefully) and so is the bathroom, could you ask for more?  I don't think so.  We had fish soup ( tom yum-ish) for dinner which was pretty good, we both agreed that it would have been nicer if it was fish ball soup and not chunks o' fish with the skin still on, (the skin was blubbery and bluish·some mutant fish from the Mekong·I keep visualizing the fish from Simpsons·you know the one with the 3 eyes that all blink at different times??? Creepy) we supplemented it with a red pork curry though and those are always great !! (The fish soup was served in a hot pot sort dilly·lots of lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves and very spicy. Question for you mom's·what would the little green pea looking things be in the curry?? They taste very bitter and have seeds in them·could it be fresh cardamom pods?? It weirds me out cause I keep thinking they are big sweet peas and then I bite into them and yuck.)
Kylie is outside right now taking video in hopes to wear the battery on the camera down so we can charge it for the 2 day trip on the slow boat to Luang Prabang, that we are hoping to get on tomorrow morning.  Things are going to be tight because we still need to get our Laos Visa and since it is Sunday nothing is open today. Also we were told that when crossing the border it is best to have American money.  We figure, that we can maybe go to the bank at 8:30am and get some American money, because it works out to be much cheaper. $35 each instead of 1900 baht each ( $65 ).  That will be cutting it close as we have to take a ferry across the Mekong into Laos, then go through customs over there, get a tuk-tuk to where the slow boat leaves from by 9:30. And get the Visa on the other bank of the river as well.  We will see·. We might just play it safe and skip the bank.  Plus if they have any brains, the border people will realize that it is a better exchange rate to take the baht !!!
Well, I totally did something stupid today, ( ha ha yeah) well it was more of an accident then anything, I was walking along minding my own business, looking at the happy hour cheap beer sign and all of a sudden I ran into an awning, well not the actual awning but the pole that is horizontal holding the awning. Kylie tried to grab me before I hit but it was too late. Everyone is so short here, I guess it was high enough, but not for me.  And it wasn't the best awning in the world, more of just a rusty metal round pipe with the threads, so now I have a crescent moon shaped cut on my forehead  L  Kylie did a good job taking care of me though J  And it doesn't hurt at all it just looks bad. (what he isn't mentioning here is that he also bonked his head on the overhead storage compartment on the bus as well this morning·now he has 2 gashes on his head·kinda looks like he got in a bar fight or something..poor baby J  But really we are being careful!!! Looking both ways before crossing the street and everything. Maybe just a klutzy phase.)
That's all we can think about writing for now. ( Going to bed early so we can get ourselves sorted for tomorrow. G'night)
Miss you all,
Keir and Kylie.
