Day 285 - 286 - Rurrenabaque - La Paz - Sucre
The TAM safety board should have read "Days since our last accident - 316" but worryingly it had been taken down. I guess they are not as proud of a board that reads "Days since our last accident - 2". Roisin, trevor, Kirsty and I did what we could to enjoy the views during the flight but for the majority of time, the pilot was fighting to keep the plane stable. With all this to consider, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when we safely touched down in La Paz. Despite La Paz being undoubtedly the most spectacularly situated city I've ever visited, i can't say I'm over the moon to be back. The altitude and constant walking up and down hills also make it the most physically demanding city I've ever been to and given our week in the Amazon lowlands, what little acclimatisation we'd mustered has vanished. We'll have to return one more time and hopefully then we'll begin to appreciate the colour, culture and oddities. Most of the population being indigenous, there are a number of traditional aspects which, to an outsider like me, take some getting used to. One of these is the plethora of llama foetuses for sale for some sort of medicinal purpose. Each to their own I guess. Our second flight in as many days and we've now arrived in Bolivia's other capital city, Sucre. No, I never realised it had two capitals either, nor do I quite know why. This flight however was worth the relatively small amount of money for the views alone. We saw some truly vividly coloured lakes in the mountains before the, thankfully gifted, pilot began the descent. the plane banked hard left round one mountain before turning sharply to the right round another. If this hadn't used up all our fingernails, the landing took up every inch of the runway. You don't need extreme sports in Bolivia, you just need to travel around!
