Days 156 - 157 - Eungella - Agnes water

Afte a typical lazy Sunday in Eungella (too much food hopefully balanced out by a long walk - this walk was a little different to those at home in that in involved walking through rainforests and even a tree), we continued our journey south. We didn't have a destination in mind and after a few false alarms where we stopped somewhere and realised it either looked shit or depressingly dull we arrived in the Town of 1770/Agnes Water about eleven hours after we left Eungella. The reason for this choice was partly because it was getting late but mainly down to us stumbling upon what appears to be a good opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef.

The last hour and a half or so of the drive was an eerie experience Eungella 1

. It was pitch black and we were unsure of our directions (and Kirsty was navigating) before the road became a dirt track. Further down the track, the fog set in in clearly defined patches. In one of the less misty patches we encountered a huge suicidal kangaroo who seemed determined to beat us at a game of chicken. When i braked to a virtual standstill he sauntered off throwing us a look of complete contempt as if we'd just ruined his fun. After the return to tarmac the ordeal appeared over. unfortunately, either someone had been playing silly buggers or the local council are absolutely clueless because the few signposts that existed were all pointed towards trees, hedges and fields. Eventually we found first the 'town' and then the hostel. The cherry on the icing though was that everyone in the hostel had unnaturally white faces. The reason - and why we didn't guess this immediately i don't know - the hostel was running a face mask event night. Personally I believe it was a bad joke for anyone arriving after having to endurethe kind of journey we had.
