Having heard rumours about power-thriving customs officials in Australia, it was possibly a bit foolish to take over the allotted quota of cigarettes into the country. Practically everyone had their bags inspected but the only article we possessed that was of any interest was a photo frame. We were the lucky ones though. We had checked in just before a couple of middle-aged Western Australian women who had seemingly bought new furniture for the whole of both of their homes - thirty packages in total for the hold. Chatting to them on the flight, as well as offering us a place to stay, they told us that they were charged AUS$650 excess baggage. Then going through customs they had a few items confiscated including a stone vase that they were alarmed to find out contained bones of some description.
The flight was slept-through in the majority and one of the air-hostesses gave me an extra KitKat - Qantas have definitely got a customer for life now! The first shock of life in Australia wasn't long coming as the equivalent of a hundred quid I got out at the airport (around a week's money in Indonesia) was barely enough for the taxi from the airport and a night's accommodation.
We managed to hae a wander into and around the city of Perth and while some of it is very pleasant, it has a surburban feel you get in any modern city. Did someone say Milton Keynes?! I'm sure this is partly due to the contrast between here and Asia but it hasn't imeediately gripped me like other cities have. Early days though.
