Day 38 - Vientiane
A laborious overnight trip culminated late this morning with our arrival in Vientiane - the capital of Laos (sorry, the People's Democratic Republic of Lao but I'm sure you'll excuse me if I just put Laos). When I hear the word capital, it makes me think of a big, busy city with plenty going on. Vientiane does not fit into this category. From what we can ascertain, there only exists hotels, temples, restaurants, bakeries and a market. Given our lack of an appetite for shopping and the fact that the temples don't appear to be too awe-inspiring, we've frequented numerous eateries in our short time here. We do often feel however, that we're just around the corner from something. Nonetheless, we've now planned our route through Laos, leaving Vientiane tomorrow.
I've also managed, much to Kirsty's annoyance, to watch the Worthington Cup Final. This has alerted me to a new task for the year - to go to a country where I don't see a Man. United shirt. Although Arsenal were more popular in India, Man United paraphernalia was common. Only one football team seems to exist in Thailand and this preference unfortunately seems to have spread to Laos.
One thing that's been very welcome in Laos has been the bread. While the English gave the world (well, some of the world anyway) architecture, the French undoubtedly taught it how to bake. After eating an average of 4 nans/rotis/chapathis/parathas a day in India, my stomach missed dough for the few days we were in Thailand. laos looks likely to score admirably in this department.
