The next day dawned sunny, bright and beautiful
. I can only describe this day as indulgent. Spent 2,5 hours on a boat cruising around Lake Como and eventually ended up in the little village of Bellagio which is called the pearl of the lake. It is renowned for its silk and I couldn't help getting a scarf for my mum - it broke the bank but the smile on her face when she got the scarf was absolutely worth it. I wandered around marvelling at this little gem. It seemed as if I had been swept into another time - the cobbled streets and the quaint village- like structures had completely enchanted. I had a late lunch on the quay front of the lake where I had a wonderful conversation with the waiter who seemed quite amazed that a South African was in his little town of Bellagio. The conversation turned to soccer and rather than ruin a good friendship I decided that I would go back to the hotel.
I got to the town of Como using the ferry from the quay close to my hotel and spent the last day in Como wandering the town. It was a quaint village and the time that I spent was quite enjoyable. The winding streets and the quintessential Italian architecture gave me a great deal to ponder over.I really wanted to learn more about art and architecture - I felt as if I was ignorant of the more artistic aspects of life. I made a promise to myself that I would spend more time learning about these new found interests. Supper that night was absolutely wonderful. I spent the evening with an amazing set of seven ladies from New Jersey. It was tremendous evening of learning of each of our cultures and countries as well as swapping ideas of life and culture. They were truly a spectacular bunch of ladies - each with very dynamic personalities and ideas. I learned more about their travels and they gave me ideas of what to do and the things they enjoyed. To use the words of a good friend - it was a spectacular evening and I learned that you can make friends/acquaintances whether you live in a hostel or a hotel :)
I was getting more confident in my navigation and travelling skills. I navigated to Milano Centrale station and on to Como - San Giovanni. The changing landscape captured my attention and I was drawn to the mountainous beauty of the surroundings. I had decided that these would be my days of idyllic freedom but I guess my entire trip was idyllic. I made my way from the station to the Villa that I was staying in - yes a Villa!!!! It didn't disappoint. The view from my window was picturesque.I spent the rest of the day lounging on the main balcony and reading. I only lifted my head to indulge myself. You can imagine it can't you - me lounging on a deck chair in the sun enjoying the surroundings and a book.Eventually I realised that it was starting to get dark and my tummy was growling , I walked down to the local pizzeria for supper. My first pizza in Italy didn't disappoint. It didn't have the same affect as the gelato but it was close to culinary heaven.
