Once we arrived, we settled in and had a guided tour of the temple. In the afternoon we all took part in an origami class and we each made a paper lotus flower. Afterwards we all learnt the technique of Buddhist meditation and practiced the techniques.
After dinner we all participated in Tea Chan, also known as Tea Meditation, which is a traditional Chinese Buddhist ritual of preparing and drinking specific tea from the high mountains. Everyone played a role in preparing the tea such as washing the leaves, brewing the tea and pouring and serving the tea.
The next morning we all woke up really early to watch the bell and drum ceremony, followed by morning chanting. Afterwards we all partook in Tai Chi, which is a form of Chinese martial arts. We then learnt about the history of the Buddha.
The experience taught us how understand and respect the Chinese Buddhist religion, which will help us during our expedition as Cambodia’s main culture is Buddhist and the surroundings are similar to the Nan Tien Temple.
