Surfing in Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is literally the end of the road.
I have spent the last several days waking up at the crack of dawn and surfing for a couple of hours at La Punta until the tide gets too low exposing the lava rock reef that makes this right point break. Chris and I went for a quick surf as soon as we made it there in the afternoon. It was windy but it still had some shape. We decided to paddle out. It looked about head high from the shore. It was scary paddling out with no one in the water to use as a reference point. I just wanted to take advantage of the lack of crowds to get to know this wave a little better. Once we made the point we realized it was macking. Biggest surf I have been in for more than 8 months. It was really windy and bumpy too. Then some sets came through and I manned up a went for one. Made the drop and shot down the line for about fifty yards and pulled off. I felt more comfortable after that. Chris and I sat at the peak or what we thought was near the peak and waited for our waves. Chris had one and made it. I was waiting when a massive set came through. I scratched over the first two waves and turned for the third that just started jacking up to break. I dropped and did a bottum turn and was racing to get around the section but it over took me. Chris was paddling out when I had caught the wave and said it was two and half times higher than me. I am 6 foot tall. Thats a fifteen foot face on that wave. He claimed it for me. The other highlights of Santa Catalina include, falling into a stream while crossing a fallen log fully clothed to the amusement of Chris and a Dutchman, surfing these racetracks for 150 yards before 8 in the morning, crab hunting
, walking back and forth on a slack line(like a tight rope but not tight) and meeting the fellow travelers at Cabanas Rolos like Kenny the Norweign and the very friendly Portugese.

Dad and I have been floating down the Amazon river the last 24 hours. We had a great time in the jungle. Dad was loving all the birds and mosquitos. He tweaked his back after falling off a log when we were fishing. The next day he stumbled again and tweaked it again. Poor dad. he was still loving it though. We are have been having a great time together. Its really wild out here. We even stayed wit... show all

Lauren loved the vid. Keeps saying 'Do again!' Glad you're having a good time. Can't wait to see pics from the Amazon. (We're kind of catching up with you here - it's Oct 15 and this is the first we've been on your blog.) Kirstin

Nice pics.....NOT!!!! I wanna see some waves barney! I just topped a week of surf out here with 5 days straight of surf. Surf that required substantial paddle out. I guess I my paddling is good now. I can surf all afternoor after work every day if I want to. I work 630 am to 3. Friday I may learn to kitesurf with a friend that is semipro. I'm also thinking about getting a boat soon.
